Malaysia to Enforce Social Media Ban for Children Under 16 Starting in 2026
Malaysia announced plans to prohibit social media accounts for individuals under the age of 16 beginning in 2026, joining Australia and several other countries moving toward stricter digital age protections for minors. The decision reflects growing global concern about online safety threats facing young users.
Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil confirmed on Sunday that the Cabinet approved the proposal as part of a national effort to curb cyberbullying, online scams, exploitation, and other digital risks. He noted that the government is reviewing strategies used in Australia and other nations, including potential use of electronic age verification through national ID cards or passports.
While Fahmi did not specify the exact enforcement date, he stressed that coordinated efforts between policymakers, regulators, and parents will be crucial to making Malaysia’s online ecosystem safer for families.
“If the government, regulatory bodies, and parents all play their roles, we can ensure that the Internet in Malaysia is fast, accessible, affordable—and most importantly, safe for children and families,” he said.
New Licensing and Oversight Framework for Platforms
Since January, Malaysia has required major social media and messaging platforms with at least 8 million local users to obtain a government license. These licensed platforms must implement:
- Age verification systems
- Content-safety controls
- Transparency and reporting measures
The stricter rules reflect the country’s broader push to regulate digital platforms and mitigate harmful online behavior—particularly among minors.
Australia Leads Global Push for Stricter Age Limits
Malaysia’s decision follows Australia’s landmark move to enact the world’s first nationwide social media ban for children under 16, taking effect on December 10. Major platforms—including Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, Threads, X, YouTube, Reddit, and streaming service Kick—face penalties of up to 50 million AUD ($33 million) for failing to stop underage users from accessing their platforms.
Australia’s policy is being closely monitored worldwide, as governments assess its impact on child safety and digital platform regulation.
More Countries Considering Age Restrictions
Malaysia is not alone. Other nations are also moving toward tighter digital limits for minors:
- Denmark recently announced plans to ban social media use for children under 15.
- Norway is advancing legislation that would require users to be at least 15 to access major platforms.
These initiatives reflect a rising global trend: governments are increasingly willing to impose stricter rules on tech companies to protect the mental health, privacy, and well-being of young users.
