Nvidia Claims Its GPUs Remain a Generation Ahead of Google’s AI Chips
Nvidia asserted on Tuesday that its GPU technology remains “a generation ahead” of the competition, responding to growing investor concerns that Google’s in-house AI chips could threaten Nvidia’s long-standing dominance in AI infrastructure.
The company posted the message on X after Nvidia’s stock dipped 3%, following reports that Meta may partner with Google to use its tensor processing units (TPUs) across its data centers.
Nvidia Defends Its Lead in the AI Chip Race
In its public statement, Nvidia praised Google’s progress in AI but emphasized that its own platform is the only one capable of running every major AI model across all computing environments.
“We’re delighted by Google’s success — they’ve made great advances in AI and we continue to supply to Google,” Nvidia wrote. “NVIDIA is a generation ahead of the industry — it’s the only platform that runs every AI model and does it everywhere computing is done.”
The company contrasted its Blackwell GPUs with ASIC chips like Google’s TPUs, saying GPUs offer greater performance, flexibility, and overall value for companies developing or scaling AI models.
Competition From Google’s TPUs Is Growing
Nvidia currently commands more than 90% of the AI chip market, according to industry analysts. But Google’s rapid advancements in its TPU lineup — especially as showcased by its new AI model Gemini 3 — have raised questions about long-term competition.
Google does not sell its TPUs directly to customers but does allow businesses to access them through Google Cloud, creating an alternative pathway to Nvidia’s GPUs.
“We are experiencing accelerating demand for both our custom TPUs and Nvidia GPUs,” Google said in a statement. “We are committed to supporting both, as we have for years.”
Nvidia Stresses Continued Collaboration With Google
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang addressed the competition earlier this month during an earnings call, reminding investors that Google remains a major buyer of Nvidia hardware and that models like Gemini continue to run effectively on Nvidia systems.
Huang also highlighted recent conversations with Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, who reaffirmed that AI scaling laws — the theory that more data and more chips lead to increasingly powerful models — are “intact.”
Nvidia argues that these scaling laws will only increase long-term demand for its GPUs and high-performance computing systems.
