Microsoft’s Latest Layoffs Impact Engineering, Product, and Legal Teams Amid AI Expansion

Microsoft’s recent layoffs have significantly impacted employees in software engineering, product management, legal counsel, and related roles, as part of the company’s broader strategy to streamline operations and adapt to advancements in artificial intelligence.

According to recent records from the Washington State Employment Security Department, obtained by GeekWire, Microsoft is eliminating 305 positions at its Redmond, Washington headquarters. This move follows last month’s layoffs, where approximately 6,000 employees—around 3% of its global workforce—were affected.

Roles Most Impacted by Microsoft’s Layoffs:

Software Engineers: 67 employees (approximately 22% of the layoffs)

Product Management: 39 employees

Technical Program Management: 35 employees

Product Marketing: 30 employees

Business Program Management: 22 employees

Legal Counsel: 22 employees

The data highlights a recurring theme: engineering and product management roles, traditionally central to Microsoft’s business model, are being significantly reshaped as the company integrates more AI-driven solutions.

AI Integration and Its Impact on Tech Roles

Generative AI, notably involved in code generation, is substantially influencing Microsoft’s operations. CEO Satya Nadella revealed at the recent LlamaCon 2025 event that AI-generated solutions now account for up to 30% of Microsoft’s coding output. While Microsoft hasn’t explicitly linked these recent layoffs directly to AI integration, the company emphasizes that technological advancements are intended to empower employees to concentrate on higher-value tasks.

Flattening Organizational Structure

Microsoft is actively reducing managerial layers to enhance efficiency and responsiveness—a trend observed broadly across the tech industry. During the company’s recent earnings call on April 30, CFO Amy Hood confirmed Microsoft’s strategic commitment to fostering high-performing, agile teams by minimizing managerial tiers.

Notably, the latest layoffs included both individual contributors and managerial roles, with mid-level “IC4” individual contributor roles facing substantial impact.

Legal Teams Facing Unexpected Reductions

Legal departments have seen increased vulnerability in this latest restructuring round. Specifically, 22 legal counsel roles and five paralegal positions in Washington state were cut, despite this group remaining largely unaffected in previous layoffs.

Ongoing Workforce Adjustments

Recent reductions in Washington state alone now total nearly 2,300 jobs, reflecting Microsoft’s ongoing adaptations to maintain competitive positioning in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.

A Microsoft spokesperson clarified that these strategic changes are essential for aligning the company’s structure with current market dynamics and future technological innovations.
