Alibaba’s AI Glasses to Rival Meta Go on Sale for $500
Alibaba has officially entered the AI wearable race, launching its new Quark AI Glasses as the Chinese tech giant ramps up its focus on consumer artificial intelligence. The new device marks Alibaba’s biggest push yet into AI-powered consumer hardware as competition intensifies globally.
Two Models: S1 and G1
The Quark AI Glasses come in two versions:
- S1 – starting at 3,799 yuan ($536)
- G1 – starting at 1,899 yuan
Both versions feature built-in cameras and lenses that act as digital displays, but Alibaba says the S1 has the more advanced display technology.
Powered by Alibaba’s Qwen AI
The glasses integrate directly with Alibaba’s Qwen AI models, the company’s in-house equivalent to ChatGPT. They also connect to the new Qwen app, enabling users to operate the glasses entirely through voice commands.
Key AI features include:
- Real-time translation on the go
- AI-generated meeting notes
- Voice-based task assistance
- Camera-enabled shopping search using Taobao pricing
Users can simply take a photo of a product, and the glasses will instantly display its price on Taobao, Alibaba’s leading Chinese e-commerce platform.
Competing With Meta and U.S. Tech Giants
Alibaba follows U.S. competitor Meta, which launched its $799 Ray-Ban Display smart glasses in September. Meta’s device includes gesture controls through a wristband and represents the company’s strongest effort yet to move into AI-driven consumer wearables.
Alibaba’s glasses will initially launch in China, where they will also face competition from domestic players such as Xiaomi and rising startup Xreal.
A Market Set for Explosive Growth
While still a small segment, the smart glasses market is expanding quickly. According to a forecast by Omdia, shipments of AI glasses will exceed 10 million units by 2026, doubling from 2025.
Alibaba appears well-positioned to capitalize on that growth. The company’s Qwen AI app reached 10 million downloads in its first week of public beta, signaling rising demand for AI-powered services.
Alibaba’s Bigger AI Strategy
The smart glasses are part of Alibaba’s broader plan to strengthen its consumer AI ecosystem. Much of the company’s AI revenue is tied to its cloud division, which saw accelerating growth last quarter.
Alibaba is one of China’s most aggressive investors in AI, competing directly with tech giants Baidu and Tencent to release new models and hardware.
Conclusion
With the launch of the Quark AI Glasses, Alibaba is making a bold push into the global smart glasses market, setting up a direct showdown with Meta and other rivals. As AI-powered wearables gain momentum, the Quark glasses may mark the beginning of the next major consumer tech wave after smartphones.
