Crypto Exchange Kraken Reaches $20 Billion Valuation After Major Funding Round
U.S.-based cryptocurrency exchange Kraken has significantly boosted its market valuation, disclosing on Tuesday that it is now worth $20 billion following an $800 million funding round. The new valuation marks a 33% jump in less than two months, fueled by renewed investor enthusiasm and a friendlier regulatory tone toward digital assets under President Trump’s administration.
Institutional Investors Drive a Dual-Tranche Raise
Kraken announced that the capital was raised across two separate tranches. The first tranche attracted participation from an influential group of institutional investors, including Jane Street, DRW Venture Capital, HSG, Oppenheimer Alternative Investment Management, and Tribe Capital. The round also received support from the family office of Kraken Co-CEO Arjun Sethi.
The company also secured a $200 million strategic investment from Citadel Securities, the market-making powerhouse led by billionaire Ken Griffin. Kraken stated that this investment was finalized at the firm’s new $20 billion valuation. Earlier reports had suggested a planned $500 million raise at a $15 billion valuation, but the final funding total ended up surpassing those expectations.
“Long-Term Conviction” in Kraken’s Mission
Co-CEO Arjun Sethi emphasized that the funding round underscores investor confidence in Kraken’s long-term vision.
“This investment represents long-term conviction in Kraken’s mission to build trusted, regulated infrastructure for the open financial system,” Sethi said. “Our goal has always been to create a platform where anyone can trade any asset at any time. The strength of our new investor base reflects both the scale of the opportunity in front of us and a shared belief in how this infrastructure should evolve.”
A Rare Large Raise in Kraken’s History
Unlike many of its competitors, Kraken has historically avoided large external funding rounds, having raised only $27 million in primary capital prior to this latest infusion. Despite that lean approach, the exchange pulled in $1.5 billion in revenue in 2024 and reported that it exceeded that figure within the first three quarters of 2025.
Global Expansion and Broader Product Strategy
Kraken says the new capital will accelerate its international growth plans, with expansion targeted in Latin America, the Asia-Pacific region, and EMEA markets. In addition to geographic scaling, the company intends to diversify its product suite.
According to the exchange, future offerings will include:
- Trading access to additional asset classes beyond cryptocurrency
- More advanced trading tools for professional users
- Expanded payments and settlement services
- Enhanced institutional-grade capabilities
IPO Timing Still on the Table
Kraken has long floated the idea of going public. Bloomberg reported earlier this year that the company was targeting an early 2026 initial public offering, though Kraken has not confirmed a definitive timeline.
With fresh funding, a higher valuation, and aggressive expansion plans underway, Kraken appears positioned to strengthen its global footprint as competition among top-tier crypto exchanges intensifies.
